Old But Gold: What’s Eating Gilbert Grape

Today I feel like reviewing an oldie because, sometimes (read: in most cases), they are truly awesome. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is no different and, if you haven’t seen it yet, I’d strongly suggest you to see it.

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is not the kind of movie you’d associate Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio with today, as it is an unusual movie about caring, family, and love. The movie is about a regular working class family in the US consisting of two sisters Ellen and Amy, two brothers Gilbert and Arnie who has mental issues, as well as their morbidly obese mother. We follow Gilbert’s life who works at a convenience store and, at the same time, needs to take care of Arnie whom he loves very much. Eventually, Gilbert meets a girl he falls in love with but he starts struggling to find some time for his private life away from the, at times, chaotic family home.

As I said, it is not your typical Johnny Depp or Leo DiCaprio movie, but I promise you, you’ll be very moved watching What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. Johnny Depp is a legend and one of the best actors of our time but Leonardo DiCaprio was only 19 when this movie came out and he was nominated for an Oscar, and you will see why! Watching him play Arnie Grape you will be convinced that he is brain damaged in real life.

I have seen this movie many times and every time it’s on TV, I watch it. It’s such an easy movie to watch and you can just enjoy it and it will make you laugh, cry and just appreciate your own life. Even though it’s just a movie, it represents the reality of many people and I just love those wake-up calls that many people need!

I will rate this movie with a 4 out of 5 because it shows you the real life of a very complicated family, and the acting is simply wonderful – and if you don’t wanna see it, I still urge you to see it just because of Leo. However, somehow it feels like the movie lacks a storyline. We follow Gilbert Grape and his life but there is not real plot to his story. In any case, it’s one of the best movies that I can always see and I recommend you do the same.
