Old But Gold: The Pursuit of Happyness

Months ago a friend of mine told me to watch The Pursuit of Happyness starring Will Smith but I didn’t want to because I was sure I would cry. However, last night I decided to watch it and oh, my God what an amazing piece of art! I wasn’t over Precious yet so I was a bit shaken and heartbroken when I decided to give The Pursuit of Happyness a chance, too, and I was definitely going to cry like a baby. And how cute is the title? HappYness and not happiness – it immediately made me positive because, for me, it signalized children and their happiness.

The Pursuit of Happyness is a true story about Christopher Gardner who is a struggling salesman who invested a lot of money in bone density scanners that he desperately tries to sell. As Gardner fails to sell the devices, his wife leaves him, he loses his house, his bank account, and his money, and at one point, he and his son – also named Christopher – sleep in a public restroom because they have nowhere to go. However, Gardner does not give up and he is desperate to find a job, so he starts interning as a stockbroker for six months, hoping that he will eventually get a real job.

Guys, this movie is everything. We see this man who desperately tries to keep his family together but fails, as his wife doesn’t want to live in poverty anymore. He runs in the streets with his bone density scanner, desperately trying to sell it to the radiologists of San Francisco. He faces so many obstacles that you end up heartbroken just watching him fight with everyday situations. I’m telling you, the filmmakers really made sure that we get the point – Chris Gardner has a very, very hard time. But what I absolutely love the most about everything is the certainty Chris has about what he wants and the determination he possesses to make himself and his son as happy as possible. It’s so heartwarming and very motivating for me personally because I’m so fascinated by people like Chris Gardner who is portrayed so fantastically in The Pursuit of Happyness. I love his sincerity, his determination, his hope, and the fact that he always wears a suit and tries to look presentable. The purpose of the movie is to motivate the audience to go for their dreams and to never giver up no matter how hard life can be, and the fact that it is based on a real story adds more value to this purpose.

Now let’s talk about Will Smith and Jaden Smith who plays Chris’ son. Jaden is the cutest little boy in this movie and he showcases true talent, so I guess it runs in the family. As for Will, he did an impeccable job portraying Gardner and it was so easy for me to forget that he was the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air for so many years. He really channels inner quality of desperation and need that make you desperate just by watching him. He reflects so many emotions from hope to fear. The Pursuit of Happyness is a movie that everyone needs to watch and learn from because the world needs more people like Christopher Gardner. You will tear up, smile, get a reality check and just witness a true masterpiece of Hollywood. Of course… 5 out of 5 clapperboards.
